The North Zone Cultural Centre of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister in November 1985. Its main objective is to preserve, develop, and promote the diverse and unique arts of Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Chandigarh, and to give them an integral form. The Centre was established with the aim of developing, expanding and popularising the vast and diverse cultures and arts of the country, so that through collective efforts, various forms of art can be given a composite identity as the cultural heritage of India.
The Centre was registered as an institution under the Registration of Societies Act, 1860. The Ministry of Culture, Government of India, is its primary governing body, under whose support and guidance the Centre operates. His Excellency the Governor of Punjab is the Chairman of the Governing Council.
