The state of J&K is famous for its natural beauty and rare splendor. It has snow covered mountain peaks, the torrential rivers, meadows, valleys, wild flowers and birds. The state comprises three distinctly marked physio-geographical regions - Ladakh, Kashmir & Jammu. All of them have their own language, culture and musical tradition. The state is peopled by many recital strands ranging from Mongoloids to Aryans and Astroloids. There is a blend of the Dards, the Mons, the Huns, The Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus. They use Ladakhi, Kashmiri, Urdu, Dogri, Hindi and Punjabi languages. And then , there are craftsmen, Shepherds, cultivators and nomads moving from place to place according to the cycle of the seasons. The highlands and mountain peaks are abode of the Lamas and monks. A number of monasteries, temples, gompas and chhortans are spread all over the state.

The dance and music of Jammu and Kashmir have a distinctive character reflecting the ecological, linguistic, ethnic and social environment of its people.
