PAHARI MINIATURE PAINTINGS
Place of origin of Pahari School or
painting is Guler. When in 1780 the Guler school was at its youth, it entered Kangra and
since then it is known as Kangra Kalam. In the beginning Haripur, the capital of Guler was
the center of Art. Pahari School came up as folk art, but afterwards got the patronage of
the kings of that place because of their being religious minded. Thus after a definite
improvement and refinement, it flourished by name of Pahari Kalam.
GULER SCHOOL
Guler School gave birth of Kangra
School. The importance is also because of its geographical situation. This place also got
some importance because of the patronage of Mughals. Raja Roop Chand got the support of
Shahjahan. He was killed during the attack on Garhwal. Then Raja Bikram Singh become his
successor. He was with Aurangzeb. He fought in the North West frontier where he was killed
in the same battle. We find so many paintings of Raja Goverdhan Singh on horseback.
Fourteen paintings based on Ramayana have also been found in Guler Kalam which are
supposed to belong to the period of Raja Dalip Singh.

KANGRA SCHOOL
The world famous Kangra School was
born in the end of 18th Century. There seems to be a combination of the Mughal and
Rajasthani Painting in this school. The paintings of this school has been compared to the
paintings of Delve. He has also expressed a love to lady's pangs of love and painted
eludes , trees, flowers etc. in the background, but it has no effect on the originality of
Kangra School, for it has its own tradition. The main patrons of this school were Hamir
Chand, Abhaya Chand, Ghamand Chand and Raja Sansar Chand. It would not be an exaggeration
if Raja Sansar Chand's time is called the Golden age of this school. The artists were
absorbed in the theme and painted it with full devotion and concentration. The artists
felt a safe life because of the love of art and magnanimity of Raja Sansar Chand. So
wherever they painted came up not only as paintings but proved to be great pieces of art.
No one could be conceived to be
better as Nayak than Krishna.

BASOHALI
SCHOOL
Basohli is situated in the
district Kathua of Jammu. Previously the Basohli Paintings were known as Tibetan as some
paintings with deep red borders and painted in yellow, blue and red colors were sold in
Amritsar market with a Tibetan name. Previously it was known as Dogra School and spread
upto Gorhwal but some businessman sold the paintings of this style in the name of Tibet.
The paintings of Pahari style found in Punjab have proved that there was no school of
Jammu but it was Basohli School. Some portrait paintings of the kings were also found
which were not even of Kangra but were of Basohli. The Basohli School was given the name
and style by the mixture of the local folk art and Mughal art. Transparent curtains and
mall garments are of Mughal style and the formation of faces is based on the local folk
style. Basohli School flourished at Kullu, Chamba, Mandi and Nurpur also. But these places
have their own importance.

CHAMBA SCHOOL
Chamba is one of
those places where Basohli effect actually reached gradually this style assumed its own
originality though in the beginning the effect of Basohli is clearly visible. The famous
artist of Basohli, Nikku already reached Chamba upto 18th Century Chamba paintings had
established originality. One of the famous artists of this place was Lehru. The Chamba
painting saw its dawn in the time of Udai Singh. The champ a painting progressed a lot in
the reign of Raja Jai Singh. As the artist Nikku had already arrived here from Guler. The
Raja Charhat Singh also developed this art to the extent that painting reached the common
man from the Royal Court and this was the reason why this style again took the shape of
folk art like other Pahari School we find two types of paintings in Chamba :
Portraits
Mythological
Paintings
At Chamba both miniature and
murals were painted. When the administration of Basohli and Guler started staggering and
became uncertain the artist of that place came to Chamba. His was the reason why the
Chamba painting which had created its own place. The Mughal effect is clearly visible in
